I was honoured, proud, and excited to be selected to compete for Team GB at the Paris Olympics. A dream come true!
Competing alongside one of my childhood heroes, Max Whitlock OBE, in what be his final competition, was incredible. Our team, including Joe Fraser, Jake Jarman, and Harry Hepworth, bonded really well. James Hall, who was our traveling reserve, was such a professional and incredibly supportive leading up to the games.
We had a strong competition as a team and qualified for the Team Final in 3rd place, just behind China and Japan. In the final, we finished 4th, with the USA bouncing back from a 5th place qualification to take Bronze, making no errors. Japan took Gold and China Silver. I’m proud of how we performed as a team and fought until the very end. We ended up as the 4th best gymnastics team in the world, beating the European champions, Ukraine, who finished in 5th place.
Personally, it was fantastic to qualify for the Floor Final in 5th spot with a solid routine. My goal was to win Gold. This final was one of the highest-scoring and best I’ve ever seen, and it was an incredible to be part of it, I enjoyed every moment.
I was the last of the eight gymnasts to perform, so the pressure was definitely on. But my routine was high quality, and I’m proud of what I delivered. My first tumble, the triple back somersault, was the only one performed by any gymnast in Paris!
Gymnastics is all about fine margins. My second tumble, a double twist punch double front somersault was heavily deducted by 0.7 points, costing me the Olympic title (0.5 for low landing and 0.2 for the connection difficulty being removed). I scored 14.466, placing me 6th, with Carlos Yulo taking Gold with 15.000, Artem Dolgopyat winning Silver, and Jake Jarman earning Bronze.
The whole Olympics was a brilliant experience that exceeded anything I could have ever imagined. Team GB provided us with everything we could possibly want. The kit was fantastic, and we received so much of it! The village was a surreal experience, mingling with all the world-class athletes I’ve watched for years, and now we were chatting and rubbing shoulders. The Nearest and Dearest Lodge gave us a relaxed space to see our families with food, drink, and nibbles, and Team GB House was great for celebrating our successes. Watching the 100m men’s athletics final with Joe and Max was brilliant. We got to see so much sport, from diving to boxing. We even managed to do some sightseeing after the competition - visiting the Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysées, and the Olympic Flame at the Louvre. Although I didn’t take part in the opening ceremony due to competing the next morning, I attended the entire closing ceremony, which was crazy, especially with Tom Cruise abseiling down right in front of us.
Now, my focus shifts to the next Olympic cycle and LA 2028.
